Wajarri Yamatji Native Title Determination

The Wajarri Yamatji community celebrates the legal recognition of their land and culture at an on-Country Federal Court hearing at Wooleen Station in regional Western Australia, held on Thursday 19 October 2017. The consent determination is one of the largest in Australia. Mr Simon Hawkins, Chief Executive Officer of Yamatji Marlpa Aboriginal Corporation (YMAC) said, “There are many stakeholders involved in the native title process. On behalf of the Board of Directors and everyone at YMAC, I would like to acknowledge the State, the Federal Court, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the National Native Title Tribunal, pastoralists, mining companies and all other parties for their cooperation and hard work over the past two decades to achieve this historic outcome. Congratulations everyone.”

Yule River 2017 Video

The 4th Annual on-Country bush Meeting at Yule River meeting place was held on 20-21 September 2017. The community passed three historic resolutions, one of which is the formation of an Independent Advisory Group to act on behalf of Aboriginal Pilbara People during government consultation on issues that impact their families.

In September of 2016, Traditional Owners from across Western Australia met at Yule River to discuss their concerns about the WA Aboriginal Heritage Act Amendment Bill and the State Government’s Regional Services Reform Plan.

Wajarri Country featured on ABC

The Square Kilometre Array (SKA), one of the largest experiments ever designed to study the origins of our universe, has been featured on ABC’s Radio National.

The Australian arm of the project to build the world’s largest radio telescope, which can be found in the heart of Yamatji Country, has been partners with Wajarri Yamatji Traditional Owners since its beginning.

PKKP Native Title Determination Video

In September 2015, the Puutu Kunti Kurrama and Pinikura (PKKP) peoples celebrated the legal recognition of their native title rights. This video documents these moments and some of the lives the decision has influenced.

After 14 years, the government of Australia has recognised what the PKKP peoples have always known.

This Malgana Mother Tongue video, The Buyungurra who didn’t listen, was released today on ABC Open. It was created jointly by  Malgana woman Bianca McNeair, ABC Open’s Chris Lewis and the Bundiyarra – Irra Wangga Language Centre.

Banjima Native Title Determination Film

On 11th March 2014 the Banjima people of the Central Pilbara region of WA celebrated the formal recognition under Australian Law of their cultural rights to approximately 10,200 square kilometres of traditional lands, at their on-country determination held in Karijini National Park.
